If you have a bad credit rating it can be difficult to get hold of a contract mobile phone. First of all there are companies, such as The Utility Warehouse, who charge a small (£10 at time of writing) upfront charge to pay for the first batch of calls. You will still need a UK bank account, but this is a good way to get a contract mobile phone without the credit check. Their phones may not be the latest ones out always but the tariffs certainly compare with most of the major mobile phone networks out there. They also provide very cheap gas, electricity and home phone deals. The savings you make could actually cover the cost of your phone bill!

If you have a bad credit rating and have a credit / debit card, it may still be worth trying to get a mobile phone through one of the major networks. The worst they can do it turn you down, but I understand that applying for credit and being turned down can often make your credit rating lower. If you want to go down this route then I suggest trying a phone with T Mobile first, using an online phone provider, such as http://www.cheapmobilephonesonline.co.uk . I have reviewed several online forums under the heading bad credit rating mobile phones, and found several instances of people with a poor credit rating obtaining a phone from them.

If you still fail to get a phone, then the only other option available is to ask somebody to get the phone on your behalf. If you have a bank account with direct debit capability then you can transfer the bill to come out of your account. A note of caution though, your “signee” will be held responsible for any of your debts should you find yourself in a position where you can’t pay the bill.

Once you have a contract mobile phone, then it may be wise to hang on to it. The advantage being that you will be able to upgrade each time your contract comes to an end. You can often get a better deal just by asking as well.
